WTF: Michelle as Angela Davis and Barack as Bin Laden

obama new yorker cover

Oh my, Oh my. Last week it was the “Rev” Jesse Jackson talking about cutting off Obama’s nuts. Now, the New Yorker’s July 21 cover art features Michelle looking like a Black Panther, with a huge gun and Angela Davis style Afro. Barack is outfited with an Al Qaeda-style outfit, match the portrait of Bin Laden on the wall next to them in what appears to be the oval office. They bump fists as the American flag burns in a fireplace.

“The intent of the cover is to satirize the vicious and racist attacks and rumors and misconceptions about the Obamas that have been floating around in the blogosphere and are reflected in public opinion polls,” Remnick says. “What we set out to do was to throw all these images together, which are all over the top and to shine a kind of harsh light on them, to satirize them. That’s part of what we do.”New Yorker editor in chief David Remnick for World News

And all I can say is WTF was the New Yorker thinking. I know the magazine business is not as good as it used to be. Maybe they needed sales and just said…f*** it. There is no such thing as bad publicity, right? Who gave this cover the green light? Did they not think the web would explode with condemnation? Did they not see the Vogue Magazine Lebron James cover?

Don’t they know that racism and stereotyping is something to be done in private, behind closed doors in America these days? This is the kind of blatant bigotry and propaganda that I haven’t seen in a while.

Sure, sure…I could see some satire somewhere in this mess…but I don’t want to. As much as I am the daughter of Black Revolutionaries and I appreciate turning stereotypes on their head…I’m not feeling this. I’m just not. The satire is NOT obvious here. Are they going to follow this up with a McCain cover with John as a ventriloquist’s dummy sitting of Pres. Bush’s lap??? Now that would be satire. I would get that joke. I agree with the Obama camp, it’s “tasteless and offensive“.

This is a case of bad journalism, bad business, and the exploitation of stereotypes and fear for the sake of selling magazines. This is not about “the story”. This is about being controversial=$$$

Other Coverage

The cover has already inspired the following online poll in a forum at the conservative online tabloid the WorldNetDaily: 59 percent of the small, unscientific sample of those taking the poll agree with the statement: “The image isn’t too far from the dangerous truth about the Obama family.”

“About one out of 10 Americans continue to believe that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is a Muslim, after all.” – ABC News (New Yorker Editor David Remnick Talks to ABC News About Cover )

  1. I just shook my head when I started seeing news of this cover — I still haven’t seen it out in the wild yet.

I don’t have much to say about this except I know that they think they were peeling back the surface between what people say and what they think, but they completely missed the mark on this one. They should leave this sort of thing to The Onion from now on.

  2. I didn’t think it was that bad. It’s certainly not anything that won’t bounce off him, and in some ways, it’s another sign that he and his campaign are a serious part of the American conscience.

  3. Well when I heard about this and later saw the cover. I was kind of upset about the whole thing. Yes it was tasteless and in bad judgment. People tend to believe over half of what they see and read. So it is just continuing the nonsense to keep going.
They just will not leave it alone. Ok, he has a Muslim name, a lot of Black do. How many times more does he have to tell Americans, I am not a Muslim?

  4. I got the impression that Obama is dressed up as a Muslim [traditional clothing] not Bin Laden. New York magazine’s animated covers are supposed to be satire and mock the mass media. I honestly don’t think its something worth ranting about.

  5. Hey Angela,

I got the impression that he was dressed like Bin Laden…because of the portrait on his right of Bin Laden. However, I don’t see a difference because traditional dress is what I usually see Bin Laden wearing in video clips.

Well, listening to all of the drama unfold, I keep hearing some snobs say, “It’s satire. I get it. I you knew satire you would get it.”

This kind of superiority kills me. Personally, I love satire. Satire is not that complex. But to just claim that if people knew satire they would not be offended and they would get it is ridiculous.

To me, it’s kind of like and artist picking up the poo of every dog in central park until he has a bucket of poo. Then he puts it on display at a gallery and dozens of people come in and say, “Oh my God, it’s poo.” Then two people come in and say, “It’s ingenious. You folks don’t get it. If you knew art you would get it.”

I am here to tell you, I get the cartoon. I get it loud and clear. So I will take this time to tell the New Yorker not to give us poo and call it art.

Yeah it`s satire. However, my take is it`s also a subtle, maybe not so subtle, descrimination against The Islamic religion. That`s the bigger issue as far as I`m concerned. It`s also one of the reasons that The U.S. is over in the Holy Land right now.

It`s a war, not only for oil but, against Islam as well. Let`s not be naive, America is the synagogue of Satan. This war is Western Christianity against Islam. I, myself, couldn`t care less about a cartoon.

The bigger picture is this demonic/satanic nation is going down anyway as we are witnessing. Just look at the banking industry, the falling value of the dollar, America now bankrupt; it`s all reaching a crescendo as was prophised.

However we, who are the descendants of slaves, should not lament for America for this has always been the decree of The Most High. It is we who should openly welcome a new dawn and way of life for this SATANIC synagogue has brought nothing but death and destruction upon the dark people of the Earth.

I shall not shed one tear for America, nor her clone Israel; for it is The Most High`s decree. I say rejoice and be exceedingly glad…

In the spirit of all our “FREEDOM FIGHTERS”, let justice reign.

“I`m not an American, I`m one of 22 mil. victims of Americanism”.

  8. The Bin Laden picture on the wall is just an added touch in the background. Like I said, this is satirical – it’s meant to be ironic, it’s supposed to be poking fun at racism, ignorance, stupidity and the extreme right.

Apparently, it seems as though Americans have lost all sight of humor…the PC warriors won’t get it, evidently. Had this been (and there has been) Bush and McCain, not a whisper would of been peeped, because then we get it. But if its Barack Obama, we always have to jump on to this defensive mode that there is some possible sinister motives behind it, and rally marching…lol. Just my honest opinion.

“tasteless” is probably the best word to describe the situation. and honestly…even if he was a Muslim..what is the BIG deal!? Its 2008…and the US is still having issues with race, religion, and sex – so damn pathetic.

  10. The problem with the cover is that it lacks context. The New Yorker, despite being snobby, is not a right-wing magazine; I have only read positive articles about Obama while the magazine constantly satirizes the Bush Admin. I do agree that the editor dropped the ball by letting the image go to press as is. Context. If the image were dwelling in the thought bubble of Rupert Murdoch, something like that, then it would be clearer that the cartoon is representing the over-the-top image Fox News is feeding the American public. Look at my blog for my own image:

And no, Terrence, this is not a war between Christianity and Islam. Jesus left the Bush Administration’s thoughts long ago. Bush is no more a holy man of Christ than Osama bin Laden a holy man of Allah. Sorry.

How does this differ from what the media is doing Sarah Palin? Everyone is up in arms about this . . . it is mind boggling!

  12. The difference is that Palin is doing a lot of harm to her own reputation…media is just reporting on it.
