Couple Thoughts from Your Girl

I haven’t been writing as much as I should.  I’m going to try to correct that in the new year.  Anywhoo, a lot is going on these days, so I’m going to start posting some random thoughts and I’m sure expound on some of these later.

1.  Why does it always take so long for organizations to recognize that their employees are pedophiles?  Priests, football coaches, teachers, etc can all be seen with young boys and young women in compromised ways but yet no one sees or tells until the person is dead or more than 50 years old?

2. Herman Cain never had a chance.  Really.  If America is shocked by the turn of events that lead to him leaving the race, then our school systems really are failing us.

3. There was an uproar from women’s orgs and birth control supporters about the sale of Plan B contraceptives to teens being blocked.  I need NOW, Planned Parenthood and all the other orgs that spoke out to be just as vocal about STDs like AIDS.  Get on the bandwagon for a cure people.  Sure, a teen could get pregnant and need Plan B or opt for an abortion, but there is not medical treatment or pill to get rid of HIV, HPV, etc.  The issues are more complex than just birth control.

4. Newt Gingrich can’t be president of the United States because…

Obama: Dag, the brother can’t smoke, too??

I was reading this article this morning that basically tries to make the case that Obama should stop smoking.

Mercury News Editorial – “Quit smoking. Now. Really. For good.We know it’s hard. If it weren’t, nobody would smoke anymore. And we know quitting just as you’re taking on one of the most stressful jobs in the world — well, it’s not great timing in that sense.

But it is in another: Everybody’s watching. Especially kids.

Perhaps more than any of his predecessors, Barack Obama, the first African-American president, will be held up as a role model, his triumphs and failures magnified as a consequence. Obama clearly relishes this opportunity to defeat bigotry and reframe the expectations of young people, especially African-Americans. And yet, he smokes.”

Well, Damn! When have we begged any of the Presidents to stop their bad habits, let alone smoking. I mean…maybe the whore-mongering or womanizing, sure.  I know that the man is a role model and all, but there are a whole lot of existing influences out there that can lead kids to smoke.  Parents, maybe?  Um…ads in every local corner store?  Oh, and lets not talk about the overall glorification of drug culture in music and media.  Are you telling McDonalds and Coke to stop advertising on shows where people smoke, drink, snort, etc?

Given the current sad economic state that the country is in, I don’t want a stressed out President who’s trying to get by on Nicorette gum.  I’ll by you a pack of Newports, Mr President. I got you, man.

Possible plot to shoot Obama stopped

DENVER, Colorado (AFP) — Democratic White House hopeful Barack Obama faces “no credible threat” from what had appeared to be a plot on his life, CNN reported Tuesday, citing authorities who nevertheless are pressing on with their investigation.

The network reported that office of the United States Attorney said law enforcement officials are “absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate.”

Four people were arrested Monday in Denver and charged with firearms and drug possession, amid fears of a plot to kill Obama.

Denver-based CBS34 said one of the men arrested had told authorities they were “going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using … a rifle … sighted at 750 yards (meters).”

The shooting was supposed to happen on Thursday when Obama is scheduled to accept the nomination as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate for the November elections at the 75,000-seat Invesco stadium, the television station reported.

The alleged plot was being investigated by the Secret Service, which is in charge of coordinating security for the Democratic Party convention as well as the FBI and the joint terrorism task force.

The US Attorney’s Office in Denver has scheduled a press conference on Tuesday to discuss the incident.

CBS34 also reported that one man was arrested on Sunday after police found two high-powered rifles in a rented pick-up truck he was driving, while another man in custody reportedly was wearing a swastika and was thought to have links to white supremacist groups. Continue reading

Vick may get out of jail early is reporting that Michael Vick could be getting out of federal prison and back in the NFL by the 2009-10 season after applying for a prison-monitored drug rehabilitation program done only in Leavenworth, KS.

Lord…I’m from Kansas and had a relative in Leavenworth…or as my dad said…”He’s workign for the state”.  It’s a strange place, and I’m not surprised that they’ve pulled out a “specia” program for Vick.

Yahoo! Sports is quoting an official with the Federal Bureau of Prisons who said Friday that Vick was being transported to a minimum security satellite prison that is under the jurisdiction of the Leavenworth facility.

Under the program, Vick could be released after serving only 12 months of the 23-month sentence he was given Dec. 10 in Richmond, Va. His exact release date remains fuzzy, as it is unclear whether the 12-month stretch would be counted from the day he entered Leavenworth or the day he voluntary entered prison in November.

Two sources tell Yahoo! Sports that Vick qualified for the drug program because his 23-month sentence included his failed drug test for marijuana after pleading guilty to the dog fighting charges.

As it stands, Vick’s 23-month prison term could translate to a release in the summer of 2009, putting his attempts at a return to the NFL for that season in jeopardy. But if Vick were to be released in late 2008 or early 2009, his opportunity to return to the league after missing only two seasons would be boosted significantly.

Getting out over drugs, but you went in over dog fighting.  Well the message to kids is…sometimes drugs do benefit you.  HUH?!?!  The lesser of two evils is working in his favor.

Vick gets 23 months, Richie got 4 days?

Ok so Michael Vick got 23 months for dog fighting and Nicole Richie got 4 day for DUI??? WTF.  Dog fighting is worse than driving under the influence?  Since when?

I know the news of Vicks sentencing is all over place and I just don’t get how he gets more time than Paris, Nicole and Lindsey combined.  Think about that mess yall.   If he was driving drunk or chasing folks while high on coke…I think he would be doing far more time than 23 months.  What’s more, He’d be “under the jail”, as my mom used to say, if he killed someone while driving under the influence.

World Aids Day: Black People are letting HIV/Aids happen to them

As we prepare to remember the legacy of HIV/Aids tomorrow on World Aids Day 2007, DEC 1, I just can’t believe that we’ve let Aids ravish the Black Community like this. Who in the Hell left the gate open?? Here are some statistics.

• Although African-Americans represent only 12.7 percent of the U.S. population, they were half of all AIDS cases detected in 2005;

• The rate of Blacks contracting AIDS is 10 times that of Whites and Black women have contracted AIDS at a rate 23 times higher than that of White women;

• Although African-Americans constitute only 16 percent of U.S. teenagers, they represent 69 percent of all new AIDS cases reported among teens;

• Black women account for 66 percent of all new AIDS cases among women and

• HIV- and AIDS-related death rates are highest among African-Americans, with Blacks accounting for 55 percent of such deaths.
There are some interesting facts among the numbers.

Both Black and White women were most likely to be infected through heterosexual activities. White women were more likely than Black women to have been infected as a result of drug use. And among men having sex with men, one study conducted in five cities found that 46 percent of such Black men were HIV infected compared to 21 percent of White men in that category.

There were some geographical variances as well. AIDS cases were highest in the eastern section of the country, with the District of Columbia leading the way with the highest rate.

However, 51 percent of Blacks living with AIDS and 56 percent of all newly-reported cases among Blacks were in the South, where African-Americans make up only 19 percent of the region’s population. Continue reading

Abortions Among Black Women: Are we being targeted?

Atlanta, GA ( — The new report the Centers for Disease Control released this week about annual abortion figures in the United States shows abortions continue to target black women more so than other ethnic groups. The 2004 report also shows about 10 percent of all abortions in the United States are done with the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug.The CDC shows a majority of women who get abortions are white (53 percent) compared with 35 percent done on African-Americans, 8 percent on women of other ethnic backgrounds and the race of the woman was unknown in four percent of the cases.

However, the abortion ratio for black women (472 per 1,000 live births) was 2.9 times higher than the ratio for white women (161 per 1,000).

Examined another way, nearly half of all pregnancies among black women end in abortion while just 16 percent of pregnancies among while women end in abortion. The abortion rate for black women (28 per 1,000 women) was 2.8 times the rate for white women (10 per 1,000) — meaning a much greater percentage

2 Cops sodomize black male, city to pay millions in settlement

I didn’t hear about this story out of Chitown back in October when the settlement came down. Man, the media just doesn’t cover black news like we need it to. That’s why we have to create our own media.

“A federal jury held two Chicago police officers liable for the unreasonable search of a man who alleged that the officers sodomized him with a screwdriver during a search for drugs.

Coprez Coffie, 23, had testified that the tactical officers used the tool on him in a West Side alley in 2004. His family hugged after the verdict was announced.

The jury was not asked to decide damages because the two sides had previously reached a settlement of $4 million if the verdict favored Coffie.”

Blackface: They went as Bobby and Whitney

Usually stories about college students going to parties in blackface doesn’t amuse me…but for some reason I smirked when I read that a Smith College student and a male friend recently went to a party as Bobby and Whitney.  The theme of the party was celebrity rehabilitation.  I was all braced to hear that they went with fake afro and gold chains…FUBU jerseys…you know.

I don’t think it’s ever appropriate for white folks to use black makeup to impersonate a black person.  However, is it ever appropriate for white people to dress up as black people and use dark brown makeup, or a brown tone that is similar to the one of the person they are dressing up as?  Many white comedians have put on beige makeup and performed white characters…is that white face?  Are we accepting a double standard?
