Racism I Found Today: Non-Black Version of “The Talk”

I’m late hearing about this terrible and blatantly racist article.  It’s written as a response to recent articles about “the talk” that black parents have with their kids, especially Black Boys, in light of the Trayvon Martin murder.  Clutch summed it up very well…

“National Review’s John Derbyshire says there is a talk that non-black Americans have with their children about race too. Derbyshire wrote about this in his post The Talk: Non-Black Version where he describes the racist views that he has instilled in his own children.

The outrageous content of his blog has many calling for him to be fired.

Here are 9 points he shares that every White parent should tell their children:

  • Avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally.
  • Stay out of heavily black neighborhoods.
  • If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).
  • Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks.
  • If you are at some public event at which the number of blacks suddenly swells, leave as quickly as possible.
  • Do not settle in a district or municipality run by black politicians.
  • Before voting for a black politician, scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a white.
  • Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.
  • If accosted by a strange black in the street, smile and say something polite but keep moving.”

In my opinion, the most horrible point he makes in the article is…

(11) The mean intelligence of blacks is much lower than for whites. The least intelligent ten percent of whites have IQs below 81; forty percent of blacks have IQs that low. Only one black in six is more intelligent than the average white; five whites out of six are more intelligent than the average black. These differences show in every test of general cognitive ability that anyone, of any race or nationality, has yet been able to devise. They are reflected in countless everyday situations. “Life is an IQ test.”

It’s ridiculous.   To talk about IQs in this way makes him sound like a 1920s eugenicist.  It’s Asinine.  Big word for a black person. Yeah, I know.  If I was crazy enough to really entertain some hard facts and numbers from this writer, they would have tp come paired with empirical research on the impact of institutional racism, failing schools, low expectations, etc.  He states this point like it’s a fact.  For the link “in every test” he links to his own website like he is a scholar on the subject.    The URL has Opinion in the string ( because it’s just that.  His personal racist opinion.  No one should take this writer seriously.

Anyway, this is the most racist thing I’ve seen…today.

Note: “Derbyshire’s editor at the conservative publication National ReviewRich Lowry, described the piece as “appalling.”[17] On April 7, Lowry announced that Derbyshire had been dismissed from National Review: “We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we’d never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways.”[18]” – source

UC San Diego Racial Unrest Continues: Hood Found on Statue

The LA Times is reporting that a “Ku Klux Klan-like hood was fashioned from a pillowcase and placed on a statue outside UC San Diego’s main library, in what may be another racially provocative incident at the beach-side campus, officials said Tuesday.”

Um…when is a klansman’s hood ever not a sign that it’s racially provocative?  Not “may be”.  The word would be “is”.

University police say they are investigating the matter as a possible hate crime and examining the hood for fingerprints and even DNA analysis.

The hood, with a hand-drawn cross inside a circle, was found about 11 p.m. Monday on the statue of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as the children’s book author Dr. Seuss, after whom the library is named. A rose was inserted into the statue’s fingers.

Why Dr. Seuss? I love Dr. Seuss. That’s just wrong!

I really feel for the black students at UC San Diego. Hell, I feel for us all. Especially those of you who have had your Post-Racial hopes shattered in the last year. Oh no, institutionalized racism is alive and well.

Rep. Trent Franks: African-Americans were better off under slavery

Oh Wow.  RACIST!!   I want to thank Think Progress for posting this.  This is some straight BS!  If you are a black person living in AZ you need to campaign really, really hard to get this man out of office.  Here’s the info:

Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) — one of the most conservative member of Congress, according to a new National Journal ranking — decried the strained state of political discourse in an interview today with blogger-activist Mike Stark. While defending hate radio host Rush Limbaugh, Franks said bipartisanship and “true tolerance” is about “being halfway decent to each other in spite of the differences.” But when the conversation turned to abortion, Franks made a clearly indecent comment, claiming that African-Americans were probably better off under slavery than they are today:

FRANK: In this country, we had slavery for God knows how long. And now we look back on it and we say “How brave were they? What was the matter with them? You know, I can’t believe, you know, four million slaves. This is incredible.” And we’re right, we’re right. We should look back on that with criticism. It is a crushing mark on America’s soul. And yet today, half of all black children are aborted. Half of all black children are aborted. Far more of the African-American community is being devastated by the policies of today than were being devastated by policies of slavery. And I think, What does it take to get us to wake up?

What?  Huh?  Don’t believe me?  Watch it (beginning 6:20):

Franks continued by saying, “[S]ometimes we get angry and say things that we shouldn’t say, and I apologize…[for saying things] that are intemperate. But I don’t want to hide from the truth.”

Truth? Readers, is this the truth? AZ, is this the truth that you want your Representatives to believe in?

Update: has picked up the story.  They report this: Abortion-rights opponents like to compare abortion and slavery; the Dred Scott vs. Sandford case is often seen on the right as the 19th century equivalent of Roe v. Wade. Still, the comments caught the attention of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

“To compare the horrors and inhumane treatment of millions of African Americans during slavery as a better way of life for African Americans today is beyond repulsive,” said Stephanie Young, a DCCC spokeswoman. “In 2010, during the 2nd year of our first African American president, it is astonishing that a thought such as this would come to mind, let alone be shared. The next time Congressman Franks wants to make assumptions about what policies are ‘best’ for the African American community, he should keep them to himself.” [Full Article]

Noose Found on UC San Diego Campus as Racial Tentions Continue

You know it’s a racial incident when a noose is found.  A noose.  That lasting symbol of white supremacy.   When someone puts a noose up…”them’s fighting words”.

According to Huffington Post, last night, a noose was found hanging on a light in the campus library, according to the UC Regents (Live)blog. A female student admitted to placing the noose there today. This incident comes after the “Compton Cookout” Black History Month drama that we’ve been following here on Hello, Negro.  Photo of the noose comes from

“This is truly a dark day in the history of this university,” Chancellor Marye Anne Fox told students gathered along Library Walk. “It’s abhorrent and untenable.”

I say, America, hate is on your doorstep.  You need to let it in and have a conversation about what is and is  not to be tolerated in YOUR house.  To the students at UC San Diego, I suggest that you band together.  Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern…an injustice to one is an injustice to all and the eyes of the nation are upon you.  Sometimes the young have to be the example of and change and evolution of thought for the old, for the establishment.

“Is Oprah Winfrey Medium Complexioned?” and Sammy Sosa

Someone googled “is oprah winfrey medium complexioned” six times and some how ended up on this blog.  Um…I don’t get it.  Somebody fill me in, is there some kind of controversy over Oprah’s skin color that I haven’t heard about?  Did she describe herself as medium complexed?  God forbid she say that she’s dark skinned, huh?  SMH, skin color is still a very polarizing concept…well, maybe it’s better said that it’s a polarizing reality in the Black community (Indian community, Latino community, West Indian community, etc).

I’m sure this is just a random occurance, but as an African American woman, I would not be surprised about a color controversy.  Look at the Sammy Sosa situation.  Clearly the man has used some sort of skin lightening treatment.  When you look at an older picture of his previously chocolate brown skin…why would you even have to wonder? I believe the claim that Sosa’s lightened skin in this photo is the result of a skin rejuvenation process and the bright TV lights at the awards show he was attending with his wife.

According to Sosa, who addressed the skin controversy with’s Enrique Rojas, he is using a cream that “whitens” his skin. Mostly, Sosa said, it’s a skin softener.

Sosa is from the Dominican Republic.  I’ve seen it noted several times that many Dominican women (and many people around the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and yes, here in the US) Dominican women straighten their hair, which some experts say is a direct result of a historical learned rejection of all things black.  This rejection, seen in many diasporan cultures, has also manifested in the use of skin lightening creams.

Fair-Skin Fashion Boosts Sales of Whitening Creams in India

Sosa is symptomatic of global self-hatred

Indian men hope skin cream will change their status, fortune

Skin-lightening creams face FDA ban: Dermatologists defend treatment…

Cream labelled ‘racism in a bottle’

The Skin Bleaching Phenomenon – Commentary

This is not an isolated incident of self hate.  Sosa is just dark skinned person dealing with issues of self hate that are rooted in the concept that the closer your skin tone is to white, the more beautiful/handsome you are.  He’s just assimilating to the value system he’s been taught to respect.  That racist system of thought devalues dark skin, period.  It is not celebrated.  It is not desirable.  Therefore, I say the correct response is education and understanding, not ridicule.

Are you a racist?: Now there’s a test!

When I saw this story on ABC News I was a bit…underwhelmed.  Um…if you are racist, you know that you are.  You might not care.  Your racist nature may not figure into your day to day life.  However, when you encounter a person against whom you hold bias simply because of their race…you will inherently think, act, and be racist.  If you aren’t racist…you won’t.

Tell someone that he’s sexist, ageist or racist nowadays and it’s easy to get a red-faced defensive reaction. In modern times, men and women of all backgrounds would rather believe themselves to be benevolent egalitarians.

Yet, while few want to be known as a bigot, millions of people seem to wonder, “am I?” — and going to the Project Implicit Web site to find out.

Started as a research tool at Yale in 1995, Project Implicit now has 11 million tests completed, and 20,000 new tests taken each week by Web surfers curious about their possible unconscious biases.

Participants are instructed to assign a class of attributes — such as smart, lazy or failure — to a single group of people — such as women, Christians, or Americans — with one or two keystrokes as fast as they can. The point is to measure the first reaction, not the self-edited one.
ABC News Online

Guess who know’s for sure is you’re a racist?  Just you, and you alone.  No matter what you say out of your mouth, in public, or how you are other wise “PC”.  Between you and your God (or non-deity of choice)…you know the truth.

That’s why people don’t like the “race card”.  No one who is racist and is not comfortable with being publicly outed as a hate monger is going to be happy about getting the race care pulled on them.  There are a lot of proud, card carrying racists who have no problem letting you know who they hate.  On the other side, those who are not racists do not want to be labeled either.  Think of any negative label that you don’t identify yourself with and then think of how offended you would by someone giving you that label publicly.  Not cute, huh.

Sigh, all things considered it’s not cut and dry.  Do I think that some people are indoctrinated and taught to hate?  Yes.   Do I think you can call whole classes and groups of people racists based on history and institutionalized racism?  Honestly…I’m on the fence about that sometimes.  Fox News doesn’t help.  Opps…did I just imply some racism.  My bad.  I’ve had good teachers.

Yet Another Republican finds digital racism funny: Frago in CA

The content of the emails that Republican Gary Frago was passing around are the most racist so far that have been noted by major media outlets.  The Republicans just need to learn that you don’t forward racist emails, and you don’t respond to or post racist comments on Facebook and Twitter.  It’s that simple.  Nothing is private anymore.  Note to the party: You don’t need anymore help looking insensitive.  You’re party’s participation in the Sotomayor hearings was quite enough, at least for this week.

Here is the scoop from Wonkette (Who’s liberal use of the n-word at one point gave me pause.  Just because you’re talking about someone else using the word doesn’t mean you should.  I’m talking about: “Niggers are just a naturally funny subject, to everyone.” Um…really?)

The latest batch of foul, blatant racism comes from “City Councilman Gary Frago,” in some place near Merced, California. And he’s not sorry, either! “I’m not the only one that does it,” Frago told the Merced Sun-Star. Yeah, we’ve noticed.

All in all, the Sun-Star obtained seven e-mails that Frago sent from October 2008 to February 2009 from an anonymous source.

Some compared Obama to O.J. Simpson while others suggested that “nigger rigs” should now be called “presidential solutions.”

Perhaps the most overboard e-mail was sent on Jan. 15. It read: “Breaking News Playboy just offered Sarah Palin $1 million to pose nude in the January issue. Michelle Obama got the same offer from National Geographic.”

The newspaper tracked down the person who sent the emails to Continue reading

Obama, Coons and Muslims…oh my!: Young Rep. Leader responds to racist comment with “LOL”

I’m sure that none of my readers will be surprised that Republican leaders have yet to understand that the crazy stuff they say online will be picked up in mainstream media or at least by the bloggers.  Here’s another example from

“First of all, why is a vice chairwoman of the Young Republicans 38 years old? And secondly, why is she “lol”-ing at racist Facebook comments? Oh, right, because she is a vice chairwoman of the Young Republicans.

Frankly? It is a pretty non-shocking example of the GOP’s ability to find humor in the craziest and most racist of places. But here is the magical tale of Audra Shay, Young Republican leader:

Shay posted something dumb about health care, on her Facebook, and one of her friends responded, as anyone would, with an angry string of slurs.

Two minutes later, Piker posted again saying “Obama Bin Lauden [sic] is the new terrorist… Muslim is on there side [sic]… need to take this country back from all of these mad coons… and illegals.”

Eight minutes after that, at 2:02, Shay weighed in on Piker’s comments: “You tell em Eric! lol.””

Note to the Republican party: It’s really, really hard to re-invent your image when your membership doesn’t embody that “change”.

But wait…it gets better.  Shay only de-friended people who complained about her comments!

Cassie Wallender, a national committeewoman from the Washington Young Republican Federation, then wrote: “Someone please help a naïve Seattle girl out, is Eric’s comment a racist slur?” She answered her own question one minute later: “Okay, why is this okay? I just looked it up. ‘It comes from a term baracoons (a cage) where they used to place Africans who were waiting to be sent to America to be slaves.’ THIS IS NOT OKAY AND IT’S NOT FUNNY.”

This was followed soon after by the chairman of the D.C. Young Republicans, Sean L. Conner, who wrote “I’m really saddened that you would support this type of racial language.! Thanks Cassie for standing up…”

Baracoons, really? Well, there is my black history lesson for the day. Wow.

Racism Reminder – Man finds racial slur on Journey’s shoe receipt

Some how I missed this story in October, so I’m posting it now (thanks to Elizabeth for bringing it to my attention).  I’m from this part of the country so, I’m not surprised.

On Oct 17, 2008, a young man went to “Journey’s” show store in Kansas City, MO (some accounts of this story say it happened in Kansas City KS…Oak Park Mall). He bought a pair of shoes and then saw an identical pair at a different store for less.? As such, he bought the identical shoes from the cheaper store and took back the original more pricey pair to Journey’s. Later on that night, as he was reviewing the receipt, he noticed that the reason for the return was “Dumb N*gger”. When he took the receipt back to the store, they didn’t even apologize but did admit that the “reason” was in the system. Click the video below to see local news coverage.

This store is a retail chain for whom you may be a regular customer.  There is power in the almighty dollar. Just something to consider. Please pass it along…

Have some N-word with your coffee: Drunken Negro Face” on sale at Greenwich Village Bakery

Hello, Negro was introduced to Drunken Negro…Face Cookies that is…today. Oh my god, my question is “Who are the racist, blind people who were buying all of these cookies and cakes? I mean…they are guilty of “insensitivity” at the least.  I’m going to need the Secret Service to create a file especially for him.

From Gothamist (visit this link for video): At at a time when any decent baker should have been selling racially harmonious black and white cookies by the truckload, one Greenwich Village bakery popular with celebrities and shows like Sex and the City has outraged neighbors by selling a “Drunken Negro Face” cookie in, um, “honor” of President Obama. [Video below.] A shocked customer tells My Fox NY that Ted Kefalinos, proprietor of Lafayette French Pastry, asked her, “Would you like some drunken negro heads to go with your coffee? They’re in honor of our new president. He’s following in the same path of Abraham Lincoln; he will get his.”

Later, her friend stopped by the bakery and said Kefalinos corrected her about the name of the cookies—they’re actually drunken “N-word” cookies. She says the backwards baker then repeated the dark suggestion that, like Lincoln, President Obama “will get what’s coming to him.” Go Secret Service, go!

And it gets worse when Fox’s Arnold Diaz goes into the store with a camera and microphone to confront Kefalinos, who suddenly makes Joe the Plumber look like a Rhodes scholar. “I called them Drunken Negro Heads. What’s the problem with that?” Kefalinos asks the newscaster with a smirk. “On Inauguration Day I thought it would be cool to change the name to Obama Heads. I just changed it for the day.” We suppose Burning Cross Bananas Foster was too complicated to mass-produce.

Gothamist has updated this story a few times…

UPDATE: We just spoke with Kefalinos on the phone and he remains utterly oblivious, telling us, “This whole thing was blown out of proportion.” He says he’s sold out of the “Drunken Negro Cakes” and doesn’t plan to make anymore, despite the fact that many customers have been requesting them (he claims). When asked whether he understands that most African-Americans find the word “negro” offensive, Kefalinos explains, “It’s a French word. It comes from the French.”

Um no…it’s really not French, asshole.  Moving on to more updates (sorry…I haven’t see racism like this in the media for what…3 days.  Sigh!).

Community Board 2 was quick to call for a boycott of Lafayette French Pastry, to which Kefalinos responds, “I’m sorry they feel that way because I was trying to do a nice thing.” Not seeming to grasp in any way the degree of outrage he’s sparked, he added, “I did it and that’s the end of it and it’s over.”

UPDATE 1/24: Now Ted Kefalinos apologizes: “Seriously, from the bottom of my heart, it was an innocent design I created. It was nothing more than just a piece of art.”
