Does HP make racist computers?

Um…it’s very interesting what people attribute racism to.  Now the facial recognition on Hewlett Packard computers.  Let me just say this is a set up for a stupid racial joke that would go something like…”I thought it would be easier to find the whites of their big ole eyes against their dark backdrop.”  Yes, yes I know I’m wrong.  Anyway, check out the video from Black Desi that is making the claim.

San Francisco – Hewlett Packard, the world’s largest maker of personal computers, said Tuesday that it was investigating a claim that its computers are ‘racist’ because they recognize the facial movements of white users better than those of black ones.

The issue was raised in an anonymous YouTube video that quickly went viral as someone calling themselves Black Desi demonstrated the effectiveness of HP’s facial recognition software.

The built-in PC camera, which is designed to follow individuals’ head movements, fails to track Desi as he moves in and out of the picture, but perfectly follows his white co-worker, Wanda, when she enters the scene.

‘As soon as my blackness enters the frame, it stopped,’ says Desi, who appears to be amused, rather than annoyed, at the limitation. ‘Black Desi gets in there, no face recognition anymore buddy. I’m going on the record and I’m saying it, Hewlett-Packard computers are racist. ‘

In a blog posting, HP officials said they were investigating the claim. ‘We believe that the camera might have difficulty ‘seeing’ contrast in conditions where there is insufficient foreground lighting,’ wrote HP social media strategist Tony ‘Frosty’ Welch.

‘Everything we do is focused on ensuring that we provide a high- quality experience for all our customers, who are ethnically diverse and live and work around the world.’

My Favorite Reverse Racism Election Night Text Message

I got some crazy text messages myself on Nov 4th after Obama won, but the one John Thrasher posted to his blog was classic.

text message imageBefore my inbox gets flooded with messages from white supremacists, please realize this is entirely a joke and not meant to be serious at all.

Billy Price is one of my favorite black men in all the land, which makes this text message absolutely hilarious!

I need to get a good night’s sleep; 7AM is pretty early.

The RNC looks like a White People Convention

I know I’m not the only one watching the Republican National Convention and saying, “Are there only white people in the audience tonight?  I thought the Republicans have said they have a diverse party make up?”. I saw about 9 black people, 2 Asian people, one dark skinned Indian woman behind Cindy McCain, and about 10 people who I can’t say what they are.  Other than that the RNC is just a sea of White people, mostly in suits.  So this is what the ruling class looks like?!?!  Must be nice.

Sure, call me a racist for pointing it out, but the DNC was much more diverse.  It actually looked like MY America.  An America filled with all kinds of people.

I’m just saying, I’m a black woman and I notice these things.  Thompson threw them some red meat, at least.

Whites no longer a majority by 2042

Associated Press – White people will no longer make up a majority of Americans by 2042, according to new government projections. That’s eight years sooner than previous estimates, made in 2004.

The nation has been growing more diverse for decades, but the process has sped up through immigration and higher birth rates among minority residents, especially Hispanics.

It is also growing older.

“The white population is older and very much centered around the aging baby boomers who are well past their high fertility years,” said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. “The future of America is epitomized by the young people today. They are basically the melting pot we are going to see in the future.”

The Census Bureau Thursday released population projections through 2050, based on rates for births, deaths and immigration. They are subject to big revisions, depending on immigration policy, cultural changes and natural or manmade disasters.  The U.S. has nearly 305 million people today. The population is projected to hit 400 million in 2039 and 439 million in 2050.

White non-Hispanics make up about two-thirds of the population, but only 55 percent of those younger than 5.

By 2050, whites will make up 46 percent of the population and blacks will make up 15 percent, a relatively small increase from today. Hispanics, who make up about 15 percent of the population today, will account for 30 percent in 2050, according to the new projections.

Asians, which make up about 5 percent of the population, are projected to increase to 9 percent by 2050.

The population 85 and older is projected to more than triple by 2050, to 19 million.

When campaigning for a black man you will face racism…duh

I just read the Washington Post piece “Racist Incidents Give Some Obama Campaigners Pause” and I just have to say DUH!!!  I’m mean really???  Really? People are surprised about campaign offices being defaced and people calling teens the N-word?  Have we all bought into the whole “color blind America” concept?  Really?

The article notes that Obama’s camp hasn’t publicized the racial incidents that have occured.  You want to know why?  You want to the reason they weren’t bold enough to print?  Can you handle it?

Because white people don’t want to hear about that stuff!!! It makes them fell bad.  That kind of news doesn’t make white people want to vote for “Barry.”  If his name is too black, too African/Muslim thus they’ve given him the nickname “Barry”,  then they damn sure don’t want to think about racism and injustice when they think of him.  White folks will not be motivated by guilt, shame, or America’s racism when voting for Obama. That much guilt doesn’t exist in America…ask a segregationist about the civil rights era, they’ll tell ya.  The things that people in Obama’s camp have suffered are nothting compared to things that protesters endured in the Civil rights era.   It took years and years and years of seeing that for white folks to get behind the cause and help move the government.

It’s better that Obama stick with connecting himself and his image to middle of the road concepts…hope…change…etc.  White America doesn’t want to see oppression and the legacy of slavery when they look at a potential candidate.  They want to feel good about giving their “black friend” a chance.

Yes…I said it.

Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible

I think Hillary Clinton would benefit from watching this series in light of her recent comments.  It’s a great video and really gave me some interesting incite on how white people perceive [or don’t perceive] white privilege.

[5 parts]

Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible is a brilliant documentary and a must-see for all people who are interested in justice, spiritual growth and community making. It features the experiences of white women and men who have worked to gain insight into what it means to challenge notions of racism and white supremacy in the United States.”

Rush Limbaugh dreaming of riots and a “white” christmas if Hillary gets the nom

“Now, I am not inspiring or inciting riots. I’m dreaming, I’m dreaming of riots in Denver,” he said mimicking the holiday tune. Mayor John Hickenlooper said, “”Anyone who would call for riots in an American city has clearly lost their bearings.” Jenni Engebretsen, a spokeswoman for the convention, declined to respond to Limbaugh. “I think we’ll pass on this one,” she said. Limbaugh is heard by more than 14 million listeners a week.

Limbaugh’s Denver affiliate, 850 KOA, issued a statement today, saying its marquee talker “was not advocating violence in Denver,” according to the statement listing program director Kris Olinger as the contact.

Who’s surprised by Limbaugh? No one, but these remarks were extra unbelievable. I guess that’s why they call it shock radio.  Who are these people who listen to these right wing extremists?  Do they have any moral consciousness?

Cooks and Liars has details

This jerk is asking for violence in the streets and the blood to flow. Responding to this lunacy today—Rush Limbaugh had to cut off the phone on caller Lisa after she slammed him over his racist and hateful comments that he made about hoping for “riots” in America.

During today’s show (4/23) Rush made the statement that he is dreaming/hoping for riots after the Dems convention if they choose Hillary over Obama. He even sang his statment to the “I’m Dreaming of a “WHITE” Christmas” tune.

It appears to me that he is hoping African-Americans will revolt if Obama doesn’t win and in his dreams we would riot and wipe each other out so that he can indeed have a “white” Christmas/country.

And he said this also: “Riots in Denver, the Democrat Convention would see to it that we don’t elect Democrats,” Limbaugh said during Wednesday’s radio broadcast. He then went on to say that’s the best thing that could happen to the country.

Here’s the audio of caller Lisa really pouncing on Mr. Viagra: (it’s a rough transcript)

Lisa: You were saying that you were hoping for a White Christmas if the Democrats choose Hillary over Obama and you even kind of sang your statement to the tune of White Christmas or did you mean a white country? What exactly did you mean by that statement yesterday?

Rush: Ho ho ho.

Lisa: Because I feel like all Americans, the American people want is what’s best for this country.

Rush: No, they don’t.

Lisa: Why does this have to be a hate-filled comment from you and other radio hosts?

Black Judge apologizes for kicking Whites out of the courtroom

Hello Negro says…”Sometimes you just gotta chat Negro y Negro. LOL”

One week after he cleared his courtroom of white people so he could have a “fireside chat” with the black defendants assembled before him, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Marvin S. Arrington Sr. offered an explanation and—for anyone offended by his act—an apology.

“There were no official acts” during the private lecture, he said, “just a frank chat.”“It was not done for race reasons,” he said, explaining that he is confronted daily with a stream of criminal acts, “most committed by African-Americans.”“At some point, it needs to come to a halt,” said Arrington, citing several cases of senseless violence—killings over $15 worth of crack cocaine, a wristwatch or for no reason at all, even the night his own sister and brother-in-law were held up at gunpoint at the door of their Atlanta home—that compelled him to try to reach the young defendants before him.

“These young people are completely out of control,” he said, adding, “People can’t go to a gas station in my neighborhood at night without somebody coming up and putting a gun on them.” Arrington’s decision to hold a “black-only” chat last week came after he had finished a morning slate of bond revocations and sentences, according to an attorney who was present.

Prior to beginning court business Thursday, Arrington, one of the first black graduates of Emory Law School, described his own troubled youth as an impetus for outreach. Continue reading
